The HIT training continues to improve my game. Two doubles and a trip were the only major blemishes on an otherwise solid outing Saturday. My 80 was good enough for 4th place, and one of my four birdies held up to win a big Giant $kin. Thing are looking up just in time for the first major of the year.
This past Saturday April 15th, TAX DAY; the Jacksonville AAGT held it's 4th event of the season at Cimarrone Golf Course in St Augustine FL. The weather was picture perfect with a sunny day and temperatures in the high 80's. The event saw the return of a tour veteran shoot the lowest score of the day and get his first win in over a year on the tour. Also the event had two repeat winners, another former winner and a new member in the winner's circle for the first time.
My friend Jack Heinemann has been a member of the AAGT for over 6 years and is one of the original members on the Jacksonville Tour. On Saturday he found his driver again and came out and shot the low round of the day, a (3 over) 75, to win the Palmer Flight. He had to hold off two great players Phil Ackley and Keith Scott who both shot (5 over) 77. Jack said, "It was great to have a low score again and return to the winner's circle".
The Sarazen Flight also had a former winner return to his winning ways. Casey Steinman, shot an 82 and held off recent winner, Joe Denton by one shot (83). Casey was one of the first players in for his flight so there were some tense moments waiting out the other scores, but he prevailed in the end with his first vicotry of 2006.
The other low round of the day came from our Nicklaus Flight, which also saw a first time winner. Don Sciotto, playing in his first event of the season, came out and shot a 77 to win by 5 shots over John Milton and Scott Gladysz (82).
In the Jones Flight, the winner came from another tour. B.J. Helmuth of the Altanta Tour came in and shot an 89 and won by one shot over Tampa Tour member Adam Brack (90). The low round from the Jacksonville tour came from new member Kevin Ridener who shot a 91 and finished third.
The other two winners of the day were players who had already tasted victory earlier in the season. In the Snead Flight, Steve Ivey continued is solid play and shot a 91 and won by 2 shots over Ryan Lurie (93) and won his 2nd straight event. In the Hogan Flight, Jason Odom, the Panther Creek Champion earlier this season, came out and shot an 81 to win by three shots over two tour legends, Murray Miller and Justin Mobley (84).
It was a beautiful day for golf and the players enjoyed sodas and (fire)water after the event. The next local event will be held in three weeks on May 6th at Windsor Parke.
The event should be a great one.

AAGT @ PVGCC --- Review
It's starting to come around. A few weeks at the HIT Center seems to have given me some much needed confidence on the course. A solid 77 (with 3 doubles) Saturday left me feeling alot better about my game than after the first two events.
On a spectacular April Fool's Day in Ponte Vedra Beach Florida, the Jacksonville AAGT held it's third event of the season at the Ponte Vedra Golf & Country Club. This course formally known as Oakbridge returned on the schedule with a great event and 95 players teeing off in the late morning. With the weather perfect, the course in good condition, the players came out and shot some low scores which lead to three playoffs in the top three flights.
It all began in the Nicklaus Flight. Amelia Lewis, the 14 year junior star was the leader in the clubhouse with a round of 74, but unfortunately this did not hold up, when both Chad Smith and 1st time participant Alex Rosswag came in one better to shoot a solid round of 73. The two headed back out on the course for a playoff which was decided on the 1st hole and Chad Smith winning his first event on the AAGT.
The playoffs continued in the Palmer Flight, with two great rounds turned in by both multi-winner John Taylor and new member Jow Lowry shooting a 73. Finishing third was Greg Reno with a round of 76, it may have been the 10k he ran earlier in the day that caused him not to catch the leaders. John and Joe headed back onto the course and after 2 holes, John prevailed to his 2nd straight victory and a possible promotion to the Nicklaus Flight.
The playoffs were not over, in the Hogan Flight, Spacecoast member Joe Marsh made a trip up to Ponte Vedra to play and came in with a great round of 78, but it was not enough as he was tied by a member of PVGCC John Lee who also shot 78. The two continued their battle in a one hole playoff and Joe Marsh won his first event of the season.
The playoffs finally came to an end in the Sarazen Flight, Joe Denton, who was promoted to the Sarazen flight this season, came in with a tour low round of 81 and was able to hold over Tampa Tour member David Herman by shot (82) to win his first event of this season.
Another former member who was promoted this season was Brian Fike in the Jones Flight. He shot a solid round of 88 and won by one shot over Chris Klein (89) who finished in 2nd Place for a second time this year.
Finally, the Snead Flight, which had it's largest field of the season had a first time winner, Steve Ivey, playing in his first event ever on the AAGT came out and shot a 95, and won by 5 shots over T.J. Smith (100).
Our fourth event of the season will be held at Cimarrone Golf Course on April 15th. They say the course has improved since last season, so it should be another great event for the Jacksonville AAGT.

UF 73 , ucla 57

Excuse me while I take a break from the golf talk and recognize the fantastic display of unselfish teamwork as my Florida Gators won the National Championship last night.
They sure have come a long way from the days of Don DeVoe and the 15 game losing streak, Vernon Maxwell's probation ridden squads and the overachieving Kruger's Kids.
It will be so sweet to see the banner hanging from the O-Dome. Billyball rocks!!
Now, how about you, Urban?
