Tip for today -- 1/26/07

Considerations for making a swing change.

When you take a lesson and try to make a swing change, remember a few points that will help with the transition. Practice the change, but do not overdo the motion that you are trying to make. Be patient because you will probably play worse before you improve. Finally, relax and do not put pressure on yourself as learning a new move or posision take several weeks.

Tip of the Day -- 01/22/07

Never rush a three-foot putt.

It is frustrating to miss a three-foot putt but when you look back at the reasons for missing, chances are you rushed the putt. Many players do not go through their pre-shot routine on three-footers, thinking the putts are easy (ha!). By skipping the pre-shot routine, you throw your feel and alignment off and put yourself at a disadvantage. Line up the putt as you would a ten-footer, take a practice stroke, and align your putter carefully. Stroke the ball solidly, and you will avoid making a sloppy mistake that will hurt your round.

Tip of the Day -- 01/19/07

Don't get long on your pitch shots.

A common fault for hitting pitch shots that are dubbed is swinging too far back on the backswing. By going too far back, there is a tendency to slow down the forward swing or decelerate through impact. The result is often a short, flubbed shot. Take the club back to about waist high and then accelerate through the ball crisply. The club will get the ball into the air with spin.

Tip of the Day -- 01/18/07

For more power, try standing a little closer.

Standing away from the ball with your driver and extending your arms may feel powerful but it is actually a weak position. You will tend to swing more freely, which makes the club feel heavier, and as a result, you will lose distance. Try addressing the ball by standing tall, with knees flexed and a slight bend in your back. Your turn will be better, and your club will turn on a more upright plane that will deliver more power to the ball.
