AAGT @ PVGCC --- Review

It's starting to come around. A few weeks at the HIT Center seems to have given me some much needed confidence on the course. A solid 77 (with 3 doubles) Saturday left me feeling alot better about my game than after the first two events.

On a spectacular April Fool's Day in Ponte Vedra Beach Florida, the Jacksonville AAGT held it's third event of the season at the Ponte Vedra Golf & Country Club. This course formally known as Oakbridge returned on the schedule with a great event and 95 players teeing off in the late morning. With the weather perfect, the course in good condition, the players came out and shot some low scores which lead to three playoffs in the top three flights.

It all began in the Nicklaus Flight. Amelia Lewis, the 14 year junior star was the leader in the clubhouse with a round of 74, but unfortunately this did not hold up, when both Chad Smith and 1st time participant Alex Rosswag came in one better to shoot a solid round of 73. The two headed back out on the course for a playoff which was decided on the 1st hole and Chad Smith winning his first event on the AAGT.

The playoffs continued in the Palmer Flight, with two great rounds turned in by both multi-winner John Taylor and new member Jow Lowry shooting a 73. Finishing third was Greg Reno with a round of 76, it may have been the 10k he ran earlier in the day that caused him not to catch the leaders. John and Joe headed back onto the course and after 2 holes, John prevailed to his 2nd straight victory and a possible promotion to the Nicklaus Flight.

The playoffs were not over, in the Hogan Flight, Spacecoast member Joe Marsh made a trip up to Ponte Vedra to play and came in with a great round of 78, but it was not enough as he was tied by a member of PVGCC John Lee who also shot 78. The two continued their battle in a one hole playoff and Joe Marsh won his first event of the season.

The playoffs finally came to an end in the Sarazen Flight, Joe Denton, who was promoted to the Sarazen flight this season, came in with a tour low round of 81 and was able to hold over Tampa Tour member David Herman by shot (82) to win his first event of this season.

Another former member who was promoted this season was Brian Fike in the Jones Flight. He shot a solid round of 88 and won by one shot over Chris Klein (89) who finished in 2nd Place for a second time this year.

Finally, the Snead Flight, which had it's largest field of the season had a first time winner, Steve Ivey, playing in his first event ever on the AAGT came out and shot a 95, and won by 5 shots over T.J. Smith (100).

Our fourth event of the season will be held at Cimarrone Golf Course on April 15th. They say the course has improved since last season, so it should be another great event for the Jacksonville AAGT.
