Okay, I've just about had it with all of the constant Napoleon-complexed media types here in Jax who insist every year that The Players Championship is the "Fifth Major".
Enough already.
Yes, its a nice tournament. The field is usually stellar. The line of champions are world class. The quirky 17th hole is a nice TV draw. Is that enough to be a "major"?
I don't think so.
And enough with the stoic, dignified background music that NBC plays in their intros ala CBS and The Masters. Its just annoying.
If it were a major, wouldn't it be sold out years in advance? Or at least a very tough ticket to get? I bet that The Masters doesn't run radio or TV ads ad nausium begging for sales. Probably, the USGA doesn't bombard the local airways either. The Open? 130+ years of tradition sells itself. Even the runt of the group, the PGA, doesn't have to have a "look at me, look at me" mentality to justify its standing.
I guess if it makes the TPC guys and gals in the red blazers feel better, so be it. To me, this tournament is not any more important than a Bay Hill, Westchester, or a WGC event.
